For those focused on Societal Impacts and Impact Based Weather discussions and research, consider submitting an abstract for the 2012 NWA Annual Meeting special session, “Social and Physical Science Fusion and the Weather-Ready Nation (WRN): A Research-to-Operations Collaboration Leading to Enhanced Impact-Based Decision Support Services.” We are especially looking for presentations and posters that will fuse/include both the research and operational components to enhance our understanding of how and why people behave the way they do while under watches, warnings and severe events.
While research by social and physical scientists is occurring, it is manly independent of operational meteorology efforts. The goal for this session is highlight and foster opportunities for social and physical scientists, researchers and operationally-focused people, to work together, in some cases side-by-side, to better understand why people react/don’t react to weather watch/warnings/severe weather alerts to ultimately to help save lives, reduce costs, and enhance the quality of life. We would like to build on the information presented at December 2011: WRN Tornado and Severe Weather Workshop and Symposium in Norman, OK, January 2012: 92nd American Meteorological Society Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA, and April 2012: WRN Workshop-Imperatives for Severe Weather Research in Birmingham, AL.
When both social scientists and physical scientists focus their efforts (and limited resources) on truly collaborating (as peers), our community and our stakeholders will benefit with improved forecasts, messages tuned to our customers and we become a truly more “WRN”!
If you would like your abstract to be considered for this session, in addition to the appropriate meteorology or hydrology focused areas, use topical labels such as Societal Impacts, Weather-Ready Nation, and Decision Support Services when submitting your abstract.
The deadline for submission of oral abstracts is 25 May 2012; poster abstracts are due 29 June 2012. Abstracts should be submitted at http://www.nwas.org/2012abstracts.html. Simply fill out the form in its entirety (you may cut and paste your abstract from your word processing program into the form), and click on the Submit Query button at the bottom of the form.
