Reminder… the deadline to submit an abstract for oral presentation consideration is May 25th. Whether it is from Hurricane Irene, to the brutal winter experienced in Alaska, to the droughts and wildfires, Mother Nature has provided a wealth of events to evaluate for presentations at the37th Annual Meeting. In addition, advances in models, dual polarization radar, satellites and the use of social media will be key topics for this year’s conference. Finally, we have two sessions focused on Building a Weather-Ready Nation. One session to discuss fusing social and physical science research and another identifying the steps to building a Weather-Ready Nation and how involvement from all in the weather community will be vital in our effort to better prepare our society to respond to natural disasters. So there are many opportunities to share about your interests and research.

If you wish to have your abstract considered for oral presentation at the National Weather Association annual meeting in Madison, the deadline is Friday, May 25, 2012. The program committee is not anticipating extending the deadline. Abstracts submitted after the May deadline will only be considered for poster presentation. Special Student Award Opportunities at the 2012 Annual Meeting

Featured

Students did you know that there are awards…with prize money…associated with the student poster session and student oral presentations?

The student poster session, sponsored by the Weather Analysis and Forecasting (WAF) Committee, is reserved for our students. There are 2 categories of undergraduate and graduate posters with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awarded in each category. A panel of judges will evaluate your poster on the quality of the research and the poster organization. The panel provides recommendations to the NWA President for approval of the winners.

In addition to the poster session, students that provide oral presentations are also evaluated and a graduate and undergraduate winner is selected.

The monetary awards change slightly from year to year, depending upon sponsorship donations. The 2011 awards were the following for each category:

  • Poster 1st Prize: $125 and 2012 NWA Dues, and a congratulatory letter from the NWA president
  • Poster 2nd Prize: $75 and 2012 NWA Dues, and a congratulatory letter from the NWA president
  • Poster 3rd Prize: 2012 NWA Dues, and a congratulatory letter from the NWA president
  • Oral Presentations – $75, 2012 NWA Dues, and a congratulatory letter from the NWA president

Link to the 2011 winners is available at http://www.nwas.org/committees/waf/11studentpresentations.php

Students when you submit your abstract, ensure you mark that you are either a graduate or undergraduate student and if you preferred to be considered for an oral or poster session. (Note the earlier deadline of May 25, 2012 for abstract to be considered for an oral presentation. Also depending on the number of abstracts submitted in each category, some requests for oral presentations may be transitioned to a poster presentation.)

Students do not pass up this opportunity to showcase your research and compete for the 2012 Annual Meeting Awards!

On behalf of the 2012 program committee, I thank you for your interest in submitting an abstract for the National Weather Association annual meeting in Madison, Wisconsin.  We are expecting a large number of abstracts this year and anticipate tough decisions as we select the oral presentations.  This year’s annual meeting abstract submission deadline, if you wish to ensure consideration for an oral presentation, is May 25, 2012.  Abstracts for poster presentations will be accepted through June 29, 2012.

She was appointed as assistant secretary of commerce for environmental observation and prediction and deputy administrator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in May 2011.

Abstracts requested for the “Social and Physical Science Fusion and the Weather-Ready Nation (WRN)” Session.

For those focused on Societal Impacts and Impact Based Weather discussions and research, consider submitting an abstract for the 2012 NWA Annual Meeting special session, “Social and Physical Science Fusion and the Weather-Ready Nation (WRN): A Research-to-Operations Collaboration Leading to Enhanced Impact-Based Decision Support Services.”  We are especially looking for presentations and posters that will fuse/include both the research and operational components to enhance our understanding of how and why people behave the way they do while under watches, warnings and severe events.

While research by social and physical scientists is occurring, it is manly independent of operational meteorology efforts. The goal for this session is highlight and foster opportunities for social and physical scientists, researchers and operationally-focused people, to work together, in some cases side-by-side, to better understand why people react/don’t react to weather watch/warnings/severe weather alerts to ultimately to help save lives, reduce costs, and enhance the quality of life.  We would like to build on the information presented at December 2011: WRN Tornado and Severe Weather Workshop and Symposium in Norman, OK, January 2012:  92nd American Meteorological Society Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA, and April 2012:  WRN Workshop-Imperatives for Severe Weather Research in Birmingham, AL.

When both social scientists and physical scientists focus their efforts (and limited resources) on truly collaborating (as peers), our community and our stakeholders will benefit with improved forecasts, messages tuned to our customers and we become a truly more “WRN”!

If you would like your abstract to be considered for this session, in addition to the appropriate meteorology or hydrology focused areas, use topical labels such as Societal Impacts, Weather-Ready Nation, and Decision Support Services when submitting your abstract.

The deadline for submission of oral abstracts is 25 May 2012; poster abstracts are due 29 June 2012. Abstracts should be submitted at http://www.nwas.org/2012abstracts.html. Simply fill out the form in its entirety (you may cut and paste your abstract from your word processing program into the form), and click on the Submit Query button at the bottom of the form. Abstracts will be published in the Meeting Agenda as submitted, so please make sure that they have been carefully reviewed and edited before they are submitted.
