Gary Cannalte, WISC Chief Meteorologist, Will Moderate the NWA Annual Meeting- WRN Customer Town Hall

Gary Cannalte is the Chief Meteorologist for WISC-TV, the CBS television affiliate for Madison, Wisconsin. He is the weekday meteorologist on News 3 Live at Five, News 3 at Six, and News 3 at 10. In addition, his forecasts can be heard on WMGN-FM (“Magic 98 FM”) and WTDY 1670 AM/106.7 FM in Madison, Wisconsin; WCLO-AM and WJVL-FM in Janesville, Wisconsin; WGLR-AM and WGLR-FM in Lancaster, WI; and WPVL-AM and WPVL-FM in Platteville, WI.

Cannalte has a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology and a Minor in Communications from Northern Illinois University in De Kalb, IL While in college, he was the on-air weathercaster at WNIU-FM, the National Public Radio station serving north-central Illinois. He began his television career in July of 1988 at WJFW-TV in Rhinelander, WI, the NBC affiliate for north-central Wisconsin. In September of 1990, he moved to WISC-TV in Madison, and was the original morning meteorologist for Madison’s first morning newscast, News 3 This Morning, in addition to serving as the meteorologist for News 3 at Noon. In August of 1999, Cannalte was promoted to the position of Chief Meteorologist and moved to a weekday evening schedule. In addition to his current newscasts, he was also the meteorologist for News 3 at 9 on TVW and now appears occasionally as the meteorologist for Fox 47 News at Nine.

Cannalte has also provided radio weather forecasts for the WeatherTrac weather company, preparing and delivering forecasts for client radio stations in Lynchburg, Martinsville, and Appomattox, VA; Morgantown WV; Paducah, KY; Caro and Alma, MI; Decatur, Danville, Kankakee, Joliet, Crystal Lake, and Waukegan, IL; Fort Madison, Sageville, and Marshalltown, IA; and Racine, Kenosha, Richland Center, Beaver Dam, Madison, and Green Bay, WI.

Gary makes many school visits and personal appearances to speak about the weather. For 12 years, he was a member of the southern Wisconsin Local Implementation Team for Project Datastreme, a program of the American Meteorological Society designed to provide teachers with a basic background and understanding of Meteorology to assist them with creating a weather unit for their curriculum.

Cannalte has also hosted a severe weather special on WISC-TV called “Weathering the Storm” and has also hosted a special on climate change called Storms of the Future.” He appears on the big-screen scoreboard delivering a “Fan Forecast” before all University of Wisconsin home football, basketball, and hockey games, and before Madison Mallards home baseball games. He has helped produce the Wisconsin Weather Calendar for the past 12 years, and is very involved with the Midland NOAA Weather Radio promotion and WISC-TV’s annual “Koats for Kids” clothing drive to provide winter clothing apparel for children and adults in need in the Madison community.

Gary is a member of the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society, and holds the AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist Seal of Approval
